Why detox?
We live in a toxic world and our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins through our food and environment. An overload of toxins can cause health issues and slow down healing from sickness.
While our bodies have natural detox systems such as sweating or eliminating, sometimes, a little extra boost is needed to reduce that toxic load more quickly, especially during illness.
What is bentonite clay?
Bentonite clay is one of the main detoxing ingredients in this detox bath recipe. In our home, it is affectionately known as a “mud bath” by my kiddos.
Bentonite clay is a by-product of ash from volcanos. While this clay is rich in minerals, it also binds to toxins and helps the body to eliminate them. Bentonite clay also boosts the immune system, helps the body to fight off infections, and reduces inflammation.
What herbs detox?
This recipe calls for a brew of two important detoxifying herbs. While you can drink this tea as a way to detoxify through the digestive system, it is also beneficial as a way to detox through the skin.
Calendula: Calendula is a common detoxifying herb that has been known to address the toxins behind sicknesses, infections, and fevers.
Nettle: Nettle is known as a cleansing and detoxifying herb both internally and through the skin. It can sooth skin irritation and also help the body detox through elimination.
How does a detox bath work?
When you think of detoxing, you may think of a drink or a pill that will help your body cleanse from the inside out. Our skin, however, is our largest organ, and it has the ability to absorb into the body and release out of the body through the pores.
A detox bath is a gentle way to pull out toxins from your body while absorbing important vitamins and minerals that promote healing. Submerging into a bath allows more of your skin to be at work (compared to just a foot bath).
Detox baths are a great tool to use during sickness (especially with children!). A sickness involving digestion discomfort makes swallowing a detox drink uncomfortable or impossible if you are struggling to keep liquids down. A detox bath is a soothing way to get rid of the toxins that are slowing down your fighting immune system without causing internal discomfort.
How to make the detox bath recipe?
To make the detox bath recipe, here are the ingredients you will need:
- 2 tbsp dried nettle
- 2 tbsp dried calendula
- 4 cups water (for brew)
- 1/2 cup Epsom salt
- 1 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp Bentonite clay
First, begin by brewing the calendula and nettle on the stove in 4 cups of water. An infusion teapot works best for this.
Run warm bath water with the plug closed and add the Epsom salt, apple cider vinegar, and bentonite clay as the tub fills. The Epsom salts and apple cider vinegar also help to flush the body of heavy metals as well as toxins. Both ingredients provide helpful vitamins and minerals for the body to absorb.
The clay will clump up as it hits the water. Use your hand to break up the clumps and mix the ingredients into the bath. Fill the bath up to half way.
Once the tea is brewed on the stove, pour it into the detox bath.
Check the temperature of the water to make sure that it is a safe temperature before submerging. You may need to let the bath cool for a minute.
Once the water is warm but safe for the skin, place your child into the bathtub (or yourself) and soak for 15 minutes. If you use essential oils, you could add 5 drops of lavender for relaxation.
When to use this detox bath recipe?
This detox bath recipe is good for many occasions. First, make it a habit to take a detox bath once a month or so for general health and detoxification.
The body’s toxic load is like a bathtub filling water. As we are exposed to toxins daily, our “bathtub” is filling up. A detox bath, along with other lifestyle changes to reduce toxins in your environment, keep that toxic load low. An overflowing “bathtub” can result in difficult health issues that manifest differently in each person.
Another great time to take a detox bath is if you are exposed to illness or showing symptoms of a virus. It is helpful to detox and free up your immune system to focus on the virus and not on the toxins. The detox bath recipe helps reduce inflammation and soothe as well.
