How do I afford it?
A great way to save money on clean, whole food ingredients is to learn how to buy in bulk! This beginner’s guide to bulk buying will walk you through how to transition to bulk buying, what it costs, what to buy (and NOT to buy), and more!
Where do I buy it?
Sourcing whole food at an affordable price can be done! Bulk buying is a great way to get the most bang for your buck. While local grocery stores or farmers markets are a great place to buy fresh produce, Costco and Azure Standard are bulk buying options that will help you stock your freezer and pantry for a month!
How do I store it all?
Here are a few ways to store the clean ingredients so that they do not go bad before you have a chance to use them.
- Glass jars – Store fresh cut fruit or veggies in the fridge in glass jars.
- Plastic containers – Large plastic containers for flour or sugar are a much better way to store these ingredients rather than trying to crumple down the top of the flour bag. Plastic containers of all sizes are great for baking staples such as baking powder, baking soda, etc.
- Freezer – Storing food in the freezer such as meat, frozen veggies, frozen fruit, extra cheese, etc. are ways to make your food last longer through the month.
- Food Buckets & Gamma Lids – A great way to store your grains in bulk for a long period of time is by using large food buckets with gamma lids, air-tight twistable lids that make it easy to get grain out when you need it. These lids are perfect for storing whole wheat grain berries. If you are ready to jump into the world of fresh milled flour, check out my grain mill buyer’s guide!
What do I cook?
When cooking a meal from simple ingredients, I like to keep my meal equation simple too.
Protein + Veggie + Carb = Healthy Meal
A few of our favorite meals that fit this equation are marinated meat on the grill with a side of veggies and rice, one pot beef and broccoli, or a bacon zucchini quiche. Whole food cooking can be simple and delicious!
Changing your whole way of buying, cooking, and eating can be overwhelming! My encouragement to you is to take it slow, one grocery trip and one meal at a time. Start by grabbing your clean ingredient pantry checklist.
